Blakemore, M.F. (2013). The water castle. New York: Walker.
Genre: Fantasy
Intended audience: Tweens and young teens.
Personal reaction to the book: A hugely detailed world, well thought out and rendered. Extremely slow-moving for the age group and full of historical and scientific material well beyond the target age group. The author has avoided romance even when she wrote herself openings for it.
All in all, it makes it a hard book to recommend, although the right reader will undoubtedly fall for its charms.
Author facts: Megan Frazer Blakemore is a trained librarian (Simmons) who lives in Maine. With three books published she is also on her third publisher. She has also taught writing at high schools and at University of Southern Maine.
